Come-out roll
On the first roll, a pass-line bet wins on 7 or 11 and loses on 2, 3 or 12. Rolling 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 establishes a point.
Once a point is set
The shooter continues rolling until that exact point appears again (pass line wins) or a 7 appears (pass line loses). Other sums simply lead to another roll.
Odds and limits
A standard pass-line bet pays even money, with a house edge of approximately 1.41%. Casinos may also offer free-odds bets behind the line, but the allowed multiples vary.
Beginner strategy
Learn one bet thoroughly before adding other bets. The colorful center of the table can contain higher-house-edge propositions that are less favorable mathematically.
Pass-line odds are favorable compared with many casino bets, but they still have a negative long-term expectation.
