Blackjack

Blackjack is a popular casino game that is also known as 21. The goal of the game is to beat the dealer by having a hand value that is as close to 21 as possible without going over. Blackjack is played with a standard deck of 52 playing cards, and the value of the cards is as follows:

  • The cards 2 through 10 are worth their face value (e.g., a 5 of hearts is worth 5 points).
  • The face cards (jack, queen, and king) are worth 10 points each.
  • The ace is worth either 1 or 11 points, depending on which value would be most advantageous for the hand.

To play blackjack, the dealer deals two cards to each player and to themselves. The dealer’s first card is dealt face up, and the second card is dealt face down (this is known as the “hole” card). Players can then look at their own cards and decide how to play their hand.

There are several options for playing a hand of blackjack, and the choice of which option to use depends on the value of the hand and the strategy being employed. The options are as follows:

  • Hit: The player takes another card in an attempt to improve their hand.
  • Stand: The player chooses to keep their current hand and not take any more cards.
  • Double down: The player doubles their bet and takes one more card, after which they must stand.
  • Split: If the player has two cards of the same value, they can split their hand into two separate hands and play each hand independently.

The dealer must follow a set of rules when playing their hand, known as the “dealer’s rules.” The dealer must hit if their hand value is less than 17 and must stand if their hand value is 17 or higher. If the dealer goes over 21, they have “busted” and all players who have not already lost win the round.

If the player’s hand has a higher value than the dealer’s hand (but is not over 21), the player wins the round. If the dealer’s hand has a higher value than the player’s hand (but is not over 21), the player loses the round. If both the player’s hand and the dealer’s hand have the same value (this is known as a “push”), the round is a tie and the player’s bet is returned to them.

Blackjack is a fast-paced and exciting game that is easy to learn but can take a lifetime to master. It is a popular choice for both novice and experienced gamblers, and is offered at almost all casinos around the world.
